Tempe UHSD Cuts Energy Use 20 Percent Through Conservation Partnership

December 14, 2020
TEMPE, Ariz. — Tempe Union High School District (TUHSD) announces its partnership with Cenergistic, a national energy conservation company, has fueled a 20 percent drop in energy use, greatly cutting district dependence on fossil fuels since the program’s start in late 2014. The success of the partnership has drastically reduced TUHSD’s carbon footprint. The energy reduced during the course of the partnership equates to avoiding the carbon emissions produced by approximately 48.6 million miles.

Additionally, six high schools were energy efficient enough to earn ENERGY STAR® Building Certification from the U.S. Department of Energy, placing them among the most energy-efficient buildings in the country.

To find opportunities to save money, Tempe UHSD personnel work closely with Cenergistic engineers, experts and the Energy Specialist to audit and optimize energy-using systems across the organization to achieve peak efficiency. The Energy Specialist tracks energy consumption at all campuses with state-of-the-art technology to identify waste and drive conservation.

During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Cenergistic Energy Specialist continued to audit district facilities for energy inefficiencies and ventilation issues, albeit more remotely. The results of the hundreds of audits during district shutdown and since reopening have been a catalyst for further savings while ensuring healthier classrooms for students.
