NEW JERSEY — In two years of a sustainability partnership with Cenergistic, a nationwide energy conservation company, Berkeley Heights Public Schools (BHPS) the School District of the Chathams (SDOC) each cut districtwide energy use more than 20 percent.
“To remove a quarter of the district’s energy use from their budget is hugely impactful,” said Scott Muir, Cenergistic Client Manager and the former Energy Specialist for both districts. “The resulting dollar savings can be used as extra funds for the classroom.”
To find opportunities for savings, BHPS and SDOC personnel work closely with Cenergistic experts and the Energy Specialist to audit and optimize energy-using systems across the organization to achieve peak efficiency. The Energy Specialist tracks energy consumption at all campuses with leading state-of-the-art technology to identify waste and drive conservation. During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Energy Specialist continues to audit district facilities for energy inefficiencies both onsite and through online technology.
“These results would not be possible without the support of the districts’ custodians, maintenance crews and administrators,” said Muir. “It’s taken a comprehensive effort to become this successful.”
The success of the hand-in-hand partnership has significantly reduced the sister districts’ collective carbon footprint. Energy reductions from the program had the effect of eliminating carbon emissions equal to more than seven million miles of car travel.
“We have worked successfully with Cenergistic to make improvements to our mechanical operating schedules resulting in savings in utility costs,” said Donna Felezzola, the BHPS Business Administrator. “Additionally, we have relied on the professional guidance of our Energy Specialist to make improvements in controlling classroom humidity levels and overall indoor air quality.”
The district serves the youth of Berkeley Heights, located in the northwest corner of Union County, New Jersey for grades PreK-12.
